Valvoline Instant Oil Change

I am a regular customer at your Piscataway, NJ location and have always trusted your team with my vehicle’s maintenance. Recently, I referred my son to this same location for his first oil change, as I wanted him to have a positive experience with a reputable shop. Before his visit, I explained to him that he only needed a basic oil change and nothing more. I also provided him with the funds based on the quoted price for that service. However, about 30 minutes later, he called me to say that the total cost was significantly higher than expected. It turns out that the representative upsold him an engine flush, which was neither requested nor necessary, as this is a well-maintained vehicle. More concerning, the representative did not clearly explain that this was an additional service with a separate charge, effectively doubling the bill. This was my son’s first experience dealing with a mechanic, and it’s disappointing that he was taken advantage of in this way. I value transparency and honesty, and I hope this matter can be addressed promptly to ensure other customers—especially young or inexperienced ones—are treated with the same respect and clarity that loyal customers expect. This place is hands down the biggest scam and upseller I’ve ever encountered. They completely lack basic mechanical knowledge. My experience here was horrible. I brought my vehicle in, trusting them to do a routine oil change, but upon arrival, I was told that my vehicle had “no oil in it” and was “slugged.” To make matters worse, the manager threatened to report it to Carfax unless I followed through with their recommendations. I asked to see the dipstick, and the manager seemed oddly nervous, like he was hiding something. So, I got out of the car and checked it myself, right there in the oil bay. To my surprise, not only was the oil NOT low, but it was slightly below full—not “slugged” at all. It was clear they were trying to pressure me into an unnecessary engine flush, expecting me to not know better. I usually go to these places for convenience and to save time, not to be scammed. After this visit, I went to my dealership, and they confirmed that all the claims made by Valvoline were completely false. In fact, just prior to this, my car had been at the dealership for a main bearing inspection due to a recall and an oil change, where they said everything was fine. I will NEVER return to this Valvoline location again. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. If you care about honesty and getting the service you pay for, look elsewhere.
